Northern California Attorneys Helping Injured Workers Recover Damages After Construction Site Accidents

Valuable Advice for Construction Workers Who Suffer Injury

Construction is one of the most dangerous industries in the United States. And while injuries can be devastating, victims hurt at a worksite can turn to the attorneys at the Law Offices of John E. Hill, P.C. for skillful and effective legal representation. We help clients obtain the compensation and benefits they need after a serious or permanent injury.

For most employees injured on a construction jobsite, Workers’ Compensation benefits provide coverage for immediate medical treatment, lost wages and disability. But oftentimes, third-party contractors play a role in construction industry accidents, meaning that injury victims may be eligible for more than the benefits they can recover in their Workers’ Compensation claim. In fact, if a third party contributes to or causes your injury, you can file a personal injury lawsuit to obtain payment for both the economic and noneconomic damages you suffer.

California Construction Sites Are Inherently Dangerous

More than 20 percent of fatal workplace injuries took place on construction sites in 2013, according to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).

The construction industry serves commercial, residential and industrial needs. While each worksite is different, OSHA has identified the following four dangers inherent to most construction sites:

  • Falls — Falls are the number one danger in the construction industry. Workers fall through open holes and from unguarded edges, elevated platforms and workstations. Serious injuries result when workers fall onto or into machinery. Severe injury and fatalities often occur when there is a failure in planning, training, safety equipment or maintenance of machinery.
  • Struck by object — When a worker is hit by an object or vehicle, the incident is referred to as a “struck by” accident. In most cases, a worker is struck by a vehicle or machinery, such as a forklift, crane or construction truck. Improperly secured equipment or objects may fall from vehicles or platforms, sometimes causing disabling injury.
  • Electrocutions — Working with electricity on any jobsite is dangerous. Hazards may exist in the form of overhead wires, damaged equipment, improper wiring, lack of grounding or arcing. Electrocution causes injuries ranging from burns and nerve damage to disability and even death.
  • Caught in/between — Excavation trenches on worksites are prone to “caught in/between” accidents. This type of accident occurs when trenches or construction materials collapse on workers or a body part is caught in a machine or between a moving component and a fixed object.
